Frozathon 3 Spring Picnic: Ice Cream for Bears Mint to Bee (Ep 68)

Three episodes. Three courses. One spring picnic. Dessert is served.

This week: Ice Cream for Bears Mint to Bee — eaten on the same imaginary picnic blanket as the last two weeks. And yes, one of us is still sipping Noble Mick's Meyer Lemon Fizz. It's that good.

Before the ice cream: a quick Hot Pocket postmortem. Darren microwaved one between recordings. The Redditors were right.

Then: Ice Cream for Bears is a 2022 startup founded by an outdoorsman who developed the recipe while earning his MBA. Their philosophy: eat ancient, live wild. No refined sugars, no factory-farmed dairy, no gut-disrupting gums. Sweetened with raw honey, thickened with egg yolks, and finished with pure peppermint oil. The chocolate chips are sweetened with dates.

In the closing segment: Murder on the Mountain concludes. The snow has stopped. Harvest Lowe is almost ready to make his accusation. But there’s a twist that nobody saw coming — including Darren and Max.

Stick around after the mystery for a Murder on the Mountain debrief: what Max planned, what Darren was thinking, what he got exactly right, and what was so, so wrong.

TWO BROS. ONE MYSTERY. VERY US.

Murder on the Mountain wasn't like anything we've done before. Was it on brand for us though? It was long, ambitious, imperfect, and didn't end the way anyone planned. And it was us being us — two friends who genuinely care about each other, creating something together. It was beautifully, messily, imperfectly on brand. Thank you for being the kind of audience that lets us try things like this. Enjoy the frozen twists and turns!

FROST BITES

And Speaking of Cold Winters
. Max's virtual background was Valley Forge National Historical Park — a place he loves for actual picnics. The real Valley Forge was rather less relaxing. From December 1777 to June 1778, George Washington encamped 11,000 soldiers there following American losses at Brandywine and Germantown. The park became a National Historical Park on July 4, 1976. It covers 3,500 acres with over 30 miles of trails. Considerably warmer than a snowbound Berkshires mansion. Marginally fewer murders.

Pic-a-nic Perfection. Yogi Bear was created by Hanna and Barbera and first appeared in 1958 on The Huckleberry Hound Show. His name was inspired by Yankees catcher Yogi Berra, and his voice was modeled on Art Carney's Ed Norton from The Honeymooners. Jellystone Park — where Yogi spent his days stealing pic-a-nic baskets — was a cartoon version of Yellowstone National Park. "Smarter than the average bear" was his catchphrase, despite schemes that almost never worked. You can assume Darren was smart enough to hold onto his basket.

Who Came First. Max thought the “bigger on the inside” Noble Mick’s pouch was like Mary Poppins’ carpet bag. Darren said it was more like Doctor Who’s TARDIS. The Doctor first appeared on the BBC in 1963. The Mary Poppins film was released in 1964. There's a fan theory that Mary Poppins herself is a Time Lord. The Eleventh Doctor once pulled out a bag and said he was glad to get it back from her. Max thought he'd be the one with the Doctor Who reference. Apparently Darren is a nerd too, but not nerdy enough to remember that TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space.

Cold in Hand, Warm in Voice. The intro music for Murder on the Mountain was Cold in Hand Blues by Bessie Smith, recorded January 14, 1925 with Louis Armstrong on cornet. The Empress of the Blues was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, began singing for coins on street corners, and rose to become the largest-selling recording artist of her day. "Cold in hand" is blues slang for being broke. The song is in the public domain now, which works perfectly for the Bros’ cold in hand budget.

YOUR COLD CUTS

That’s it for our spring picnic! What frozen foods or drinks would you bring on a picnic? And where’s your favorite picnic spot? Real or animated national park?

Murder on the Mountain is a closed case too. Who did you think did it? Did Harvest Lowe do anything right? And more importantly, should we try anything this ambitious again?
